SOMEONE’S CRYSTAL BALL NEEDS CLEANING

An article from 1996 by Bob Metcalf who “invented” ethernet and founded 3COM where he makes some dire predictions about the future of the Internet.

Among some of his gems of foresight:
- # Capacity. You’ve read that the Internet was designed to survive thermonuclear war, but it’s repeatedly been brought to its knees, its circuits choked, for example, by the reaction to one measly jury verdict in Los Angles. The Internet is intermittently overloaded, and the TCP/IP architecture doesn’t deal well with overloads. Furthermore, the Internet’s naive flat-rate business model is incapable of financing the new capacity it would need to serve continued growth, if there were any, but there won’t be, so no problem.

- # Security. Already most TCP/IP networks are not on the Internet but behind security fire walls, in Intranets. In early 1996, another series of major security breaches will drive the rest of the productive Internet to safety and out of reach.

Yes bandwidth and security remain problems but somehow the ‘Net keeps rolling along.

WORLD DESTRUCTION BEGINS SEPTEMBER 29

Mark September 29 on your calendar because it will mark the beginning of the end of the world.

That’s the chilling news from E.T. expert Dr. Terry Johnson, who claims various conglomerations of alien races are conspiring to destroy planet Earth on that day — with the help of a few volcanoes and earthquakes.

Johnson says an earthquake is scheduled to take place in Guadalajara, Mexico, and when the “crest” of the quake happens, a giant spacecraft will slam into the fault line like a “kamikaze” fighter and start a global chain reaction that will result in the ultimate destruction of the planet.

He claims the E.T.s want to destroy Earth because, in his words, “They’re afraid of human creativity and our unique ways of problem solving.”

Some humans will be saved, and Johnson says many are already being abducted to other planets to be used as super computers.

It sounds hopeless, but he says hundreds of human abductees are working as a resistance force by learning to fly UFOs.

Whew, I was getting nervous until I read the last line.

BLOGGING GROWING UP?

A recent study by Blogads came up with this survey of over 15,000 blog readers.

Interesting results but unfortunately this means more intensive marketing for us bloggers to put ads on the site. The Google Ads link at the top here has currently made me about $2.00. I won’t be quitting my day job anytime soon.

See story here but watch out for all the ads.
