VACATION DAY 1

Holy shit it’s cold!! 23 below with wind chill approaching -40. What a way to start the Christmas vacation. First thing this morning I had guy knocking on the door – his tire was flat and he didn’t have a jack. Spent 15 minutes trying to figure out how to get the jack out of my Jeep (it’s screwed down underneath the rear seat) and then watched him risk frostbite to remove a tire that just didn’t go flat, it exploded.

Off to the coffee shop for my morning fix. The sun is so bright today that it’s painful. Add the clouds of salt dust being churned up by the traffic and it was almost impossible to see. Sun=warmth – not today bucko.

Even though I’m on vacation, the gods have conspired to make sure that I don’t enjoy myself too much. I have some system testing scheduled so it was down to the basement, log in through the VPN only to find that the test data hasn’t been loaded by our client. Grumble, grumble, grumble.

Yesterday we attended the yearly regulars party and Jake’s Boathouse. Good times, free food and drink and a chance to share some laughs with some good friends. We’ve met some very interesting people in our time at Jake’s (25 years) and yesterday’s group was a perfect example of the diversity:
- airline pilot and his wife who just retired from her position as a senior flight attendant
- retired gas company technician and his wife, a retired bank teller
- a big rig driver
- a inventory controller for a ball bearing company and his wife who is a customs broker
- a retired pharmacist’s assistand and her husband (who just happens to be my boss)

Jake’s is very much like the old sitcom “Cheers”. Everybody knows your name.

YOU’RE WELCOME

Yesterday, Firefox ran a 2 page ad in the New York Times. The page on the left lists the names of 10,000 people or organizations that have donated to the development of this supberb browser. Somewhere in there is my name (I think).

TICK, TICK, TICK

The countdown is on. At 5:00 this afternoon I begin my winter vacation and don’t get back to the office until the New Year. Oh bliss!

Of course I’ll be working from home, business never stops when you’re in IT, but just being away is enough of a holiday for me. I’ll have time to do my Christmas shopping, do some things around the house and just generally goof off. Who knows, I may even find some time and energy to update this site a little more often than I have been.

Next Friday, we’re off to Maxine’s for Christmas. 3 days in the woods should do something for my spirit.

SUNDAY’S PICTURE

!@(westjet1.jpg:R240 http://www.eyeno.net/images/westjet1.jpg “westjet”) This was taken late in 2002 on my last business trip to Winnipeg Manitoba. We were closing down the branch and we stayed right at the airport. Here we see a Westjet 737-700 series in the midst of a quick turnaround. I timed it out at about 20 minutes to arrive, unload, reprovision, reload and depart.

Westjet is one of the Canadian startup airlines that have given Air Canada fits and eventually forced them into bankruptcy protection that they’ve just now ended. No frills is the rule now and Westjet, modeled on the successful Southwest Airlines operation, is the number 2 airline in Canada.

SENSELESS

On Friday about 15 minutes walking distance from where I live a female teacher at Bramalea Secondary School was shot in the head as she walked to her car. She died later that night and her husband is in custody as police continue to investigate this senseless, horrific act.

Living in the Greater Toronto Area, we have our share of murders but it’s always frightening when they happen close to home. If it is determined that this is a case of domestic violence taken to the ultimate end, the sense of fear will only increase.

I cannot understand what drives a person to commit the most final of crimes. When that crime is perpetrated on someone you know, and supposedly loved at one time, it goes beyond all reason.

NOW THAT’S A WATER BOMBER

!@(drop01.jpg:R160 http://www.eyeno.net/images/drop01.jpg “747″) Forest fires in remote areas require the application of water and flame retardant. The more liquid you put on the fire, the sooner you put it out. Evergreen Aviation is putting the finishing touches on a refitted 747 that will become the largest water bomber in service. At 24,000 gallons a drop, this giant will be quite the addition to the smokeaters’ arsenal.

EYENO’S JUKEBOX

!@(rb.jpg:R120 http://www.eyeno.net/images/rb.jpg “Risky Business”) Today’s entry is another one that gets me as much for the image and memory it conjures up as for the music itself. Love On A Real Train by Tangerine Dream from the movie Risky Business that was released in 1983. The breakout role for Tom Cruise is best remembered, in my mind at least, for the scene where Cruise and the beautiful Rebecca De Mornay take a midnight train ride. This song plays in the background and the trance like feeling perfectly counterpoints the passion.
