3 HOTS AND A COT AND HOPEFULLY SOON THE LETHAL SHOT

I’ve had thousands of people ask me, “EyeNo what’s up with Scott Peterson now that he’s on death row awaiting execution for killing his wife and unborn son?” Well, wonder no more, just mosey on over to his website and keep up with all the latest news.

SECRET HANDSHAKES, CATS EATING YOUR FACE AND OTHER URGENT MATTERS

Snopes is your one stop shop for anything to do with the urban myth but, sometimes, they get questions that even they can’t (or won’t) attempt to answer. Of course we all want to know the answer to questions like these:
>Is it true that you are more likely to die from a champagne cork than a poisonous spider?

>how much would a penguin egg cost to buy and ship to texas email me as soon as you get the answer to this question bcuz i would like to buy a penguin egg so please email me asap!!!

Read the entire list of unanswerables here.

WHAT A NOVEL IDEA

So American Airlines has shown a profit for the first time in a long while. And how did the suits manage this feat? By listening to their employees. When challenged to come up with cost-cutting ideas, the workforce responded with ideas like using 1 engine instead of 2 to taxi. Another idea saved $300,000 a year by sharpening drill bits instead of replacing them.

Why do companies continue to use consultants and hire CEOs who’s claim to fame is that they can eliminate half the headcount but consistently forget to ask the people who do the job day in and day out what can be done to cut costs? We pay people to be experts but can’t seem to fathom the idea that might know how to do things better. Certainly, there’s been companies like IBM who empower their employees to innovate but for every Big Blue there’s a thousand others who manage by edict and spoonfeed the rank and file procedures and working instructions that were out of date immediately after being written.

My wife developed a “Vision Contest” at work that challenged everyone to submit ideas directly related to their job function that would save time, money, increase morale or better the relations with our customers. It has been a success for a number of years but it’s a regional program, not company wide. Instead, our “Masters In The Mountains” fund consultant studies that look great on paper but are impossible and/or dangerous to implement. Why? Because the consultants and those who commission them have lost all touch with the real-world. If it takes 2 people to comfortably perform a task, why can’t we try it with 1 or 1 1/2? (I love the discussions we have where I have to list how many people it takes to satisfy a specific function - fractions are acceptable.)

So good for you American Airlines. And good for you Jan. You’ve proven that there’s still room for common sense in today’s business world.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

R. D. Laing

>“We live in a moment of history where change is so speeded up that we begin to see the present only when it is already disappearing.”

LONG WEEKEND

Ahhh… three days off. A long weekend so we can celebrate Simcoe Day. First Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario, John Graves Simcoe must have been one hell of a guy for us to get a day off work. Or perhaps he was just lucky enough to have a birthday in early August. Who cares, I need the rest.

I’ll lift a glass of something cold in your honor tomorrow Sir!

Still testing upload feature for Flickr. Bear with me for a while and I promise I’ll start posting somethings with a little more relevance instead of just droning on and on in an attempt to test the line break problem and possible fix.

Just a little test to see if I can figure out why Flickr is adding all these line feeds when I upload a picture. I won’t leave this on unless the darn thing works. Pretty neat feature that they have to allow you to upload a picture to your account and at the same time post an entry to your blog witha thumbnail and link to the original.
Ok, I’ll stop now.

Today marked the successful launch of the aging shuttle Discovery. While checking the news, I came across a link to this picture taken earlier this month before the first attempt was made. Just thought this shot was so damm
cool that I had to share it.

I DON’T WANT TO SAY I’M A BAD GOLFER BUT…

I guess it’s time to get some golf lessons.

A PRAYER FOR PEACE

A PRAYER FOR PEACE

A PRAYER FOR PEACE,

As we watch the events unfold in London, Baghdad and numerous other places

in the world, I was reminded of this statue in the ruins of St. Nikolai

Cathedral in Hamburg, Germany. The church was badly bombed during WWII and

most of it has been left as is. A small children’s garden of peace lies in

the center of what once would have been where the congregation met to

worship.

60 YEARS ON

Trinity

Sixty years ago yesterday, the first nuclear explosion was unleashed by man. Codenamed Trinity , it briefly created another sun in the desert near Los Alamos New Mexico.

Led by Dr. Robert Oppenheimer, a group of scientists fulfilled the US government’s desire to create a weapon that would bring a quick end to WWII. Oppenheimer remembered that a line from the Bhagavad Gita went through his mind as he witnessed the detonation “I am become death, the destroyer of worlds.”.

The Cold War may be history but the legacy of the Superpowers’ unbridled orgy of nuclear weapon creation lives on as the world worries that terrorists may create or have already created “dirty bombs” using a few pounds of the tons of misplaced plutonium loose in the world. When you look at the havoc caused by 4 10 pound devices using conventional explosives in London, it’s almost impossible to imagine how many deaths would result from a small radioactive bomb detonated in a busy city.

They say “you can’t put the genie back in the bottle”. The problem now is that we don’t really know where all the genie’s children are hiding.

I FEEL SO HONORED

If you click on the comment on the post below you’ll see that this humble page has been visited by Royalty. I took 3 years but finally I’m getting the notice I deserve.

Greetings Princess Maryann Milan! In future correspondance, please do not call me “Dear”. My wife reads this and I don’t want her getting any ideas that I’m having cyber affairs with nobility.

An interesting new twist on the Nigerian Email Scam that was so popular over the last few years.

HOT! HOT!! HOT!!!

As Toronto melts into its 3rd week this summer of high temperatures and higher humidity, I’m almost glad that I have to spend most of my Saturday in the computer room. One of the nice things about mainframes is that they need a shit load of cooling and that’s a good thing right now.

I teed off at Peel Village this morning at 5:30 and I was sweating buckets by the time I reached the first green. The temperature was already 25C with the humidity making it feel more like 31C. The sun wasn’t even up yet!! Shot a 46 for nine holes which isn’t bad considering I could hardly hang on to my clubs.

So here I sit backing up a system and waiting for the propeller-head from IBM to come in and install some additional memory in our main AIX server. With any luck I’ll be out of here by 1pm and can get home to watch the British Open.

WHAT DAY IS IT AND WHERE THE HELL AM I??

Back home again. At least I think I’m home. My body clock is so screwed up that I can’t be sure anymore. Arrived back from Calgary very early this morning (home at 1a.m.) and I want to sleep more than anything else that I can think of. Getting off the plane, I was immediately hit by how hot and humid it is in Toronto and the forecasters are only promising more. Calgary was beautiful except for just as we pulled into the airport when a dust storm came up and some showers hit. Our aircraft was delayed coming in and we got off about 45 minutes late.

waiting

This shot (click it to enlarge) was taken while we were waiting for our flight. This Westjet 737-700 was bound for Comox British Columbia and for some reason decided to sit around for a while. Perhaps it was due to the thunderheads you can just barely make out in the background over the Calgary skyline.

Praries

This one was taken over the praries and gives you an idea of how beautiful they can be on a sunny evening.
