QUOTE OF THE DAY

In honor of Jan’s birthday tomorrow.

I. F. Stone

“If you live long enough, the venerability factor creeps in; first, you get accused of things you never did, and later, credited for virtues you never had.”

SAY WHAT?

Had to download the latest version of Apple’s QuickTime video player today.  Had no choice but to get iTunes as well.  I’m not going to use it but when I decided to look at the inteface I was forced to read the EULA (End User License Agreement).  Usually, these are masterpieces of bafflegab but I was immediately struck by this which was shown in CAPITAL LETTERS so I wouldn’t miss the point:

THE APPLE SOFTWARE IS NOT INTENDED FOR USE IN THE OPERATION OF NUCLEAR FACILITIES, AIRCRAFT NAVIGATION OR COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS, AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL SYSTEMS, LIFE SUPPORT MACHINE OR OTHER EQUIPMENT IN WHICH THE FAILURE OF THE APPLE SOFTWARE COULD LEAD TO DEATH, PERSONAL INJURY, OR SEVERE PHYSICAL OR ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE.

Whoa!  That’s a little heavy just to use a crappy, overpriced music download service. Thanks Apple!

QUOTE OF THE DAY

Charles Peters

“Bureaucrats write memoranda both because they appear to be busy when they are writing and because the memos, once written, immediately become proof that they were busy.”

A PERFECT MORNING

[thumb:479:l]The last morning before the clocks go back. An early tee off with friends. Sunshine finally made an appearance after a week of clouds and rain so it was great to get out for one of the last rounds of the year.

[thumb:478:r]Peel Village Golf Course is owned and operated by the City of Brampton. In 1999, it was officially recognized as ’s first fully-certified municipal course under the Audubon Co-operative Sanctuary System. I’ve seen everything from deer to coyotes on the course and over a 100 species of birds call it home. Careful course management ensures that Peel Village is consistently lush even in drought conditions without the need for excessive irrigation or chemical usage.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO PLAY A GAME?

Hollywood has always had a love affair with techonolgy and with computers they found perfect plot vehicles.  Unfortunately, in real life, computers aren’t as powerful, fast or sexy as Tinseltown would have us believe.

Behold, The Misuse Of Computers In Movies.  Containing such gems as:

Laptops, for some strange reason, always seem to have amazing real-time video phone capabilities and the performance of a CRAY Supercomputer.

 All monitors display inch-high letters.

The really advanced ones also emulate the sound of a dot-matrix printer. (See The Hunt For Red October or Alien)

Bonus points if you get the reference in the title of this post.

RAKING THE SUMMER AWAY

Took the day off work today in lieu of Thanksgiving which I missed last week in Switzerland.  A beautiful Fall day with plenty of sun and light winds.  A great day for yardwork.  We had heavy frost this morning so I had to wait a few hours before I could attack the large tree in the front yard which after months of shade decided to drop its leaves faster than a $20 hooker drops her skirt.

Fire up the new leaf blower and gather everything at the front of the property so the city can come pick them up.  Cut the lawns, hopefully for the last time.  Clean the last of the windows so we can get as much sunlight as possible in the cold months to come.

It’s supposed to be rainy and cool for the next week and it looks like this weekend’s golf could be a little damp and chilly.   Idiot me will be out there, time is running out and I’ve missed a few games because of my travels.

THE NIMBLE BUSINESS

FedEx keeps 5 empty aircraft flying around at night just in case an extra aircraft is needed to handle an overload of parcels.

Wow!!

TRAVELLING SHOES

6:20 AM. Zurich airport. Gate 71. In 1/2 hour Lufthansa flight 9025 will carry me off to Frankfurt on the first leg of the long trip home.

In 12 hours I’ll be home and the suitcase can take its proper spot in the closet for a while (hopefully the rest of the year).

SAME SHOT DIFFERENT DAY

[thumb:474:l] (clicky to make biggy)Vitrually the same shot as yesterday but today the fog hadn’t rolled in yet. We’re looking towards the North end of Lake Zurich. Last day in Schindelligi and now I’m back in Kloten for one more night before flying out dark and early tomorrow morning.

I’m glad the meetings are over. All in all, they were very good. I learned a lot and had lots of opportunities to network with my counterparts from all around the world. Still, the best days of meetings don’t make up for being away from home so long.

My flight leaves in 13 hours and I’m ready. Lufthansa and Air - take me home!

FOG’S LIFTING

[thumb:473:l] Early morning outside my hotel in Feusiberg Switzerland. The fog comes from Lake Zurich and is just starting to lift as I wait for a ride to the office in Schindelligi. As I write this, we just finished 10 hours of meeting and we’re waiting to go out for dinner.

I think this picture is really worth clicking on so that you can see some of the detail.

[thumb:472:l] (click to enlarge) The view outside my hotel window at the Panorama Resort & Spa in Feusiberg Switzerland. The resort is partially owned by the Chairman of the Board of our company so we get a good rate. I’m here for two days of meetings and then it’s back to Kloten for one night before I finally fly home on Thursday.

The only problem with this place is that the cows that wander around very close to the resort all wear giant bells that ring constantly as they walk or eat. Very charming until you have to listen to it for a few hours. Hopefully they go back to the barn to sleep before I hit the sack.

I really, really, really, REALLY want to go home!

HIGH ON THE MOUNTAIN

[thumb:350:l] (Click any picture to enlarge)The author on Mt. Titlis in Engleberg Switzerland. An incredible view. The temperature was about 1 degree C and the clouds rolled in and out the whole time we were there. After a 45 minute cable car ride (3 seperate cars including one that revolves as it climbs), we were treated to an incredible view.

[thumb:352:r] This picture shows the last of the three cable car runs returning to the base of Mt. Titlis with the village of Engleberg in the background. At 10,000 feet in height, breathing gets a little bit difficult and you really feel the pressure change as you come back down.

[thumb:351:l]The trip from Zurich to Engleberg passed through Zug and Lucerne and the view is spectacular all along the way. I’m glad I decided to take this excursion and I’ll probably be posting pictures for a while.

A DAY IN THE MOUNTAINS

[thumb:349:l] The internet connection is being very flaky tonight so you’ll have to get by with this one picture. Taken in Engleberg Switzerland at the foot of Mount Titlis. A great day and I’ve got lots of pictures to upload.

MT. TITLIS

[thumb:348:l] That’s where I’m headed tomorrow. A full day trip.
