Hollywood has always had a love affair with techonolgy and with computers they found perfect plot vehicles.  Unfortunately, in real life, computers aren’t as powerful, fast or sexy as Tinseltown would have us believe.
 
Behold, The Misuse Of Computers In Movies.  Containing such gems as:
 
 Laptops, for some strange reason, always seem to have amazing real-time video phone capabilities and the performance of a CRAY Supercomputer.
 
 All monitors display inch-high letters.
 
 The really advanced ones also emulate the sound of a dot-matrix printer. (See The Hunt For Red October or Alien)
 
Bonus points if you get the reference in the title of this post.

  1. title is taken from the film Wargames, starring matthew broderick. if i recall correctly, the computer that uttered (in a rather cool electronic voice) the lines ‘do you want to play a game?’ was named after the computer programmer/designer’s deceased child – joshua.

    … and yes, hollywood’s PCs do seem to operate according to rules that we mere mortals can only dream of…
