So the Ontario Provincial government is looking to pass legislation that would enable the Premier to declare an emergency and give himself broad powers including the right to force healthworkers to stay on the job and restrict travel. Of course, this is all predicated on the Avian Flu scare.
Though it’s reasonable to accept these restrictions given this particular possibility, I’m much more worried about the next crisis. Who is setting the criteria here? Any law that gives the government the ability to curtail the peoples’ individual rights must be clearly written so that the definition of an “emergency” is not open to the whim of the ruling party.
