On Tuesday November 14, Glenn Beck of CNN’s Headline News interviewed Keith Ellison (D-MN) the first Muslim to be elected to the US Congress.
Beck, in a startling piece of journalistic asshattery, got right to the heart of the matter by saying,
‘And I have to tell you, I have been nervous about this interview with you, because what I feel like saying is, “Sir, prove to me that you are not working with our enemies.”‘
OK, so he was trying to make a point that there is a deeply held but not unanimous feeling that American Muslims are not doing enough to condemn faith based terrorism. Rep. Ellison, to his credit, shot back with,
“Well, let me tell you, the people of the Fifth Congressional District know that I have a deep love and affection for my country. There’s no one who is more patriotic than I am. And so, you know, I don’t need to — need to prove my patriotic stripes.”
What raises this from the normal idiotic media personality level to true Asshat greatness is that this doesn’t appear to be the first time that Beck has shown his bigoted slant. A few examples:
- if “Muslims and Arabs” don’t “act now” by “step[ping] to the plate” to condemn terrorism, they “will be looking through a razor wire fence at the West”
- “Muslims who have sat on your frickin’ hands the whole time” rather than “lining up to shoot the bad Muslims in the head” will face dire consequences.
I’ve only watched this slimebucket a few times and really hate his style so I have to thank MediaMatters for collecting these gems. If I’d actually heard and watched him say this crap, I’d probably be out looking for a new TV.
So congratulations Glenn Beck, you’re my AssHat Of The Day. Come pick up your prize anytime and, perhaps, you could take back an honorable mention to your employer for allowing this type of hate-speak on the air.
