Trenton air show – Pictures now online

CFB Trenton

Did some quick processing and put a bunch of pix from the Trenton air show up online

The C-17 Globemaster III put one one heck of a demonstration.  This is what over 40,000 pounds of thrust will do to a 1/4 million pound (empty) aircraft.  This big, and I mean big, transport shot into the sky handling more like a fighter than a hauler.

Well, maybe it doesn’t have quite the performance of a CF-18 Hornet which seems to stand on its tail at liftoff but still very impressive.  This beautifully painted Hornet, piloted by a young man with the unfortunate callsign “Donor”, twisted and turned for a few minutes before joining up with 2 other aircraft for the Centennial flypast.

The Hornet flanked by Hawk One, a restored CF-86 Sabre, and a Tutor from the Snowbirds team in a once in a lifetime photo opportunity.

Speaking of the Snowbirds, they put on their usual spectacular show.

Just what the Doctor ordered

I feel much better.  Tired, but better. 8 hours of standing and watching the airshow at CFB Trenton did me a world of good.  It was great to think about nothing except what I was looking at in the viewfinder.

A very impressive flying display capped off by the Snowbirds aerobatic team.  This untouched shot shows the 8 plane maple leaf pattern.  Sharp eyes out there will notice there’s a hole just to the left of the leader.  The regular pilot who would fill that slot went back home to be with his wife and their newborn baby.  Even with a missing man the formation must be maintained.

There were so many great moments today.

Hawk One, the restored F86 Sabre, a CF-18 Hornet in 100th anniversary colours and a Snowbird Tutor in a centennial flypast.  Truly amazing to see 3 generations of Canadian military power in the air at the same time.  Couple of hundred photos to go through and clean up.

A little therapy

With everything that’s gone on lately I’m definitely ready for a little personal time.  What better way to relax and think about other things than to watch planes go fast?

I’m currently in Belleville Ontario and it’s 6am.  In two hours I hop on a school bus for the short trip to CFB Trenton for the Anniversary Weekend Air Display put on by 8 Wing.

Yesterday, I spent the day at the Canadian Aviation Historical Society meetings where we listened to a number of very interesting speakers talk about Canadian aviation.  Topics ranged from training in the 20’s to the CC-177 Globemaster III, the newest and largest addition to the Canadian forces inventory.  We had some fun and learned a few things and I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Today I’ll be loaded down with 3 cameras ready to shoot my brains out.  The last time I got close to airplanes was at Wings & Wheels and I was far too busy to really enjoy myself so I’m really looking forward to today.

On the agenda:

  • 60 year Memorial Gates rededication
  • Parade
  • Fly past
  • bands and colours presentation
  • Skyhawks parachute team
  • Snowbirds and the Hawk One F86 Sabre
  • Griffon Search and Rescue Demonstration
  • Hercules Para Drop
  • CF-18 demo team
  • Centennial flight
  • CC-150 Polaris / CF-18 air-to-air refuelling demo
  • CC-177 Globemaster III

Oh yes, there will be pictures later.

Closing a life

There it is.  A life in 5 lines.  Hurt a whole lot to see this when I opened the paper today even though I knew it would be there. Part of the process.  Now that life is over the paperwork goes on.
