The RCAF decommissions the last Avro Anson.  The Anson, named after a British Admiral of the 18th century, entered service in 1940 and was selected as the standard twin-engine aircraft for the training of pilots, observers, wireless-operators and bomb aimers.  Over 20,000 aircrew received their training in it.

A contract is signed for the development and production of the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt.  It went on to become the heaviest single-engine WWII fighter to go into production and the first piston-powered fighter to exceed 500 mph.  More Thunderbolts were built than any other fighter

Da Vinci parachute

Edward Hogan makes the 1st parachute jump in Canada from a hot-air balloon in Quebec.  No picture of the event or the man seem to be available but the idea had been around since Leonardo Da Vinci designed the one above

The Curtiss Canada flies at Long Branch, near Toronto, and becomes the first twin-engine aircraft designed, built and flown in Canada.

Curtiss Golden Flyer

Six months after the Silver Dart becomes the first powered airplane to fly in Canada, pilot Charles Willard flies the Glenn Curtiss Golden Flyer in Toronto.  The first flight lasted all of 10 seconds.

CF-TCC Lockheed Electra 10A

Trans Canada Air Lines flew its first regular service, on the Vancouver, BC – Seattle Washington route, in a Lockheed 10A Electra.

This picture of the restored Electra CF-TCC was taken in 2007 at the Toronto Wings & Wheels Heritage Festival.  TCC still flies and looks (and sounds) great.

KC-135A Tanker

The Boeing KC135-A tanker completes its first flight.  Still in service today, the KC135 is the primary refueling platform for the US Air Force.

Air France A340 - CDG

Air France, France’s national airline, is formed.  Today Air France and KLM are both part of a European holding company making the it the largest airline company in the world.

Photo taken at Charles De Gaulle airport in Paris.  I’m onboard an Air France A340 as another one waits.
