I’M COMING HOME

Still in Calgary. Didn’t bother trying to reset my internal clock so I’m writing this at 4:15 in the morning local time. I’ll be back home tonight by midnight so this is going to be a long day.

Got everything done that I’d planned on so today is a day for catching up on emails, working on some problems and then we’ll take a departing employee out for a farewell lunch.

The weather here has been great for late January. Yesterday it got up to 10C and was sunny. Looking out at the mountains, you can see a line of clouds that looks permanent and the locals tell me this is a tell-tale sign of a Chinook wind which accounts for the warm temperatures.

Last night we went out for a feed of Alberta beef. Mad Cow be dammed, that’s fine eating!

VACATION DAY 1

Holy shit it’s cold!! 23 below with wind chill approaching -40. What a way to start the Christmas vacation. First thing this morning I had guy knocking on the door – his tire was flat and he didn’t have a jack. Spent 15 minutes trying to figure out how to get the jack out of my Jeep (it’s screwed down underneath the rear seat) and then watched him risk frostbite to remove a tire that just didn’t go flat, it exploded.

Off to the coffee shop for my morning fix. The sun is so bright today that it’s painful. Add the clouds of salt dust being churned up by the traffic and it was almost impossible to see. Sun=warmth – not today bucko.

Even though I’m on vacation, the gods have conspired to make sure that I don’t enjoy myself too much. I have some system testing scheduled so it was down to the basement, log in through the VPN only to find that the test data hasn’t been loaded by our client. Grumble, grumble, grumble.

Yesterday we attended the yearly regulars party and Jake’s Boathouse. Good times, free food and drink and a chance to share some laughs with some good friends. We’ve met some very interesting people in our time at Jake’s (25 years) and yesterday’s group was a perfect example of the diversity:
- airline pilot and his wife who just retired from her position as a senior flight attendant
- retired gas company technician and his wife, a retired bank teller
- a big rig driver
- a inventory controller for a ball bearing company and his wife who is a customs broker
- a retired pharmacist’s assistand and her husband (who just happens to be my boss)

Jake’s is very much like the old sitcom “Cheers”. Everybody knows your name.

SUNDAY’S PICTURE

!@(stack.jpg:R300 http://www.eyeno.net/images/stack.jpg “sunrise”) Today’s picture is best viewed at full size so click on this thumbnail to see it in all its glory. Taken at Peel Village golf course in Brampton at about 7am yesterday, I was struck by the vertical feature as the rising sun found a small hole in the clouds. Or at least that’s what I think it shows.

MAXINE

MAXINE

A young girl from Peterborough marries a dashing young man and follows him from one end of Canada to the other. Along the way, she raises a boy and a girl.

Some hard times come and go and she ends up finding herself in a house amongst the trees. Long forgotten artistic talent blossoms. The house becomes a home filled with beauty sprung from her own hands and mind.

She entertains, she travels and she smiles. A lot. Not all the time because without dark clouds you could never truly appreciate the sun.

A dog and a cat are her constant companions and she’s never alone. Friends from far and wide visit and check up regularly. A daughter in England and a son in Brampton always hold her dear in their thoughts.

The years move on but somehow she becomes more beautiful every year. The inner glow dims a bit now and then but overall only grows like the flowers in her garden.

Happy Mother’s Day Maxine.

IT’S STARTED

I understand the weather forecast in Iraq is cloudy with scattered periods of cruise missles.
A bad joke but there you go. Baby Bush finally has his war on and now we get to watch the
body count go up. I’ve made it abundantly clear that I think this is a bad idea but all we can
do now is hope that they get it over quickly and the human cost isn’t too high

Spent the last two days in Montreal on business. Hectic days, quick meals and no chance
to see the sites. Too bad because I think Montreal is one of the great spots to visit. The downtown
is so vibrant and alive, no matter how bad the weather. Sunny but cool for both days. I’m going
back in April over the Easter weekend (work again) and hopefully I can take the gang that’s going
with me out to visit a few spots.

Look for an update on the flight page.
